About the Awards
Workplace safety award programs are an established part of many provinces’ overall injury prevention strategy. In Nova Scotia, it’s just one of the ways we are trying to reduce the human and economic toll of workplace injury.
The Mainstay Awards combine all current Workers' Compensation Board and Nova Scotia Labour and Workforce Development awards into one world-class safety awards program.
Building on the success of Nova Scotia's inaugural mainstay Awards of 2009, the 2010 safety awards program has been expanded to recognize more individuals and encourage representation from labour groups throughout the province.
The Mainstay Awards program continues to be developed in consultation with labour and industry groups.
Why did we call them the Mainstay Awards? Because in nautical terms, the mainstay braces the main mast on a sailing vessel – just as safety provides critical support in navigating through the business day.
The Mainstay Awards recognize Nova Scotians - the organizations, companies and individuals that reside and work here - as leaders in promoting a culture of safety. Effective injury prevention and return-to-work management programs or initiatives are publically rewarded, resulting in positive company morale, corporate reputation and ultimately, a competitive market advantage.
But most importantly, safer workplaces mean more Nova Scotians return to home and harbour at the end of the day.
